8 Symptoms of an Irregular Heartbeat

by Heart Saver NZ

Do you often feel dizzy or tightness in your chest? This may mean you have an irregular heartbeat, also known as cardiac dysrhythmia or arrhythmia, where the electrical activity in the heart is faster or slower than normal.

While some irregular heartbeats may not be life-threatening, some can cause Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) which can be fatal.

Below are eight symptoms of an irregular heartbeat:

  1. Heart palpitations
  2. Fluttering sensations in the chest or neck
  3. Dizziness or light-headedness
  4. Chest pain/tightness
  5. Faster or slower heartbeat
  6. Fainting
  7. Fatigue
  8. Shortness of breath

These symptoms are common signs of an irregular heartbeat which causes a lack of oxygen and blood flow.

If you exhibit the above symptoms on a regular basis and for no apparent reason, e.g. exercising, you may want to seek advice from a medical professional.

Don't leave it to chance.
